Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to identify influencing factors on Meaning in Life(MIL) among single mothers, such as depression, perceived health status, sex-role identity and general characteristics.

Methods : The data were collected from February to June 2002. The subjects were 288 women registered in Working Women¢¥s Center and YWCA in Busan. The measurement tools used were Meaning in Life, depression items of SCL-90, sex-role inventory and perceived health status inventory. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA with Tukey¢¥s test, and multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS WIN 10.0 software.

Results : The results were as follows; 1. The levels of Meaning in Life, 55.9% of the subjects felt a loss of Meaning in Life, 37.8% were in pursuit of Meaning in Life but had not discovered it completely and 6.3% felt they had established Meaning in Life. 2.40.3% of the subjects have experienced mild depression, 36.5% of the them experienced moderate depression. and 6.9% of them experienced high level of depression. 3. 6.9% of subjects perceived their health status low and 75.0% of them have perceived their health status moderately. 4. 13.2% of subjects were classified feminity, masculinity 12.5%, androgyny 36.1 % and undifferentiated 33.7%. 5. Depression and androgyny were the main influencing factors of Meaning in Life. When Meaning in Life was entered into the equation as the dependent variable, 14 variables explaining 48.6% of the variation in Meaning in Life score.

Conclusions : Most single mothers of this study suffered existential vacuum for loss of Meaning in Life. Identified influencing factors of Meaning in Life were the level of depression, androgyny. Especially the level of depression was most highly influencing factor on Meaning in Life. Therefore it is nursing intervention for raising of single mother¢¥s Meaning in Life necessary to decrease depression, to increase androgyny.
